Times they are a’changin’ by Mom

Well, Henry made it through last weekend’s big trip to CT with very little complaints. (Although he wouldn’t take the bottle for John and fussed a bit in the car). He slept most of the way up and back and managed to stay calm in the backseat with Mom to keep him company. This made John seem a bit like a chauffer…but it was worth it to keep “The Penner” happy.

I’ve noticed that Henry’s always on his best behavior in front of company and reserves his meltdowns for later in private with only his Mom and Dad as witnesses. Example: Last week I took him to Baker Books to see my old friends and co-workers. Henry was a perfect angel and charmed all he met. Then, on the half-hour drive home he had a complete meltdown. I had to try and soothe him by sticking my fingers in his mouth while driving down the highway. A feat I don’t want to repeat again anytime soon.

There have been quite a few progressions (and regressions) in Henry’s behavior in the past few weeks. He can now roll over (from his back to his tummy). He kicks very high and very hard. He’s a few days away from discovering his feet (right now he holds his knees with his little hands while I’m changing him). He has gotten far more vocal and will babble in a most sincere way to any and all who will listen. He has also gotten louder and can squeal in delight (I call it his pterodactyl laugh) and also howl in outrage. He can also lift his head up at a ninety degree angle while resting on his tummy. In fact, Henry has abs of steel as he’s constantly doing crunches in an effort to sit up. And, speaking of sitting up…he’s quite good at it now (with only a little support from Mom and Dad). I expect him to be able to sit on his own very soon.

In the regressive category, Henry has stopped sleeping five hours at night and is now averaging about three or four. He is also harder to put back to sleep at his nighttime feedings and he’ll often wake up minutes after we put him in his crib (which can be very frustrating). His feeding cues have also changed and I can no longer tell when he’s hungry and his schedule has become more erratic (instead of feeding every two hours like clockwork…now it varies from day to day. Some days we go three hours in between and others he wants to eat every hour and a half). And, he’s more easily distracted when I’m feeding him. He does this thing now where he’ll pop of my nipple, turn his head to look up at me, wait until he’s caught my eye, and then give me a huge grin. I swear he’s flirting with me!

All in all, despite his many challenges, we love him more and more each day. I mean…c’mon. How could you not love that little duckling?

  1. KNOCK IT OFF! He’s looking more and more like you, Stoutie! I’m going to eat his face off.

  2. YIPE! Ummm…maybe we WON’T be visiting you anytime soon. ;^)

Besides, if there’s any face-eating to be done I’M going to be doing it.

He’s the cutest duckie I’ve ever seen! Sounds like you are having a blast being a Mom. Take care!

  4. He apparently does well for the camera too. He looks like he’s up to something. Considering he’s related to me, I know he’s up to something.
Love that little munchkin a bunch, he’ll be grown before you can say; “Not another dirty diaper!”

Wow! He really looks like both of you. The duckie hat is awesome.

    :)

  6. Thanks, everybody, for all the support. Last week was a rough one for both Henry and myself. We were both cranky and frustrated with being inside (Mom was cranky because she turned 35 and didn’t really have the opportunity to celebrate and Henry was cranky because he’s a growing boy). I had to keep reminding myself that I am blessed…which is easy to do when I look at his cute little face.
    :^)

p.s. Maggie, when can we visit?

  7. Jeezzzee Laura, I know everyone is going to call me soft but did you have to cut that ducks head off to make a hat. He is cute enough without shoving his head into the head of a baby duck. DANG. Sure is cute though. Happy birthday again. I will be sending you some more baby clothes as soon as Jen is done making them. Love you.

  8. Holly cow!!! Where did you find this picture? That ducks chin looks exactly like Henry.

  9. Dork! ;^)
