Henry and I had quite a week. Senor Cranky-pants seemed to be revving with both motors. He was crabbier than usual and definitely not acting his own sweet self. I noticed that he seemed to be rubbing at his ears and eyes a lot more. And he was much more difficult to put down to bed at night. He seemed to need some extra soothing and bouncing after his feeding. John and I suspected that he might be teething. It seemed a bit early (just a week shy of his four-month birthday)…but John cut his first tooth at 4 and a half months and I cut my first tooth at five months.

The pinnacle of crankitude seemed to occur on Wednesday night when Henry awoke at the witching hour (about an hour after we had finally put him down) and had a colossal freak-out. He was wailing at the top of his lungs and could not be soothed. He wouldn’t even take the breast (a VERY unusual occurence). After a few minutes of trying to “shush” and bounce him to a more reasonable disposition, I finally stuck my finger in his mouth to see if I could feel any teeth coming in. Henry munched down on my finger for a few seconds and then started sucking. This was enabled me to calm him down enough so that he would take the breast. After a few minutes he passed out in exhaustion.

Friday morning I decided to take Henry to visit the doctor just to rule out the possibility of an ear infection (or other some-such problem). The doctor determined that he was perfectly healthy and could find nothing wrong. She did conceded that our diagnosis of teething could be the problem. Score one for the new parents!

In other (better) news, Henry has now nearly doubled his birthweight to 14.89 lbs. Unfortunately, we have about 200 size 1-2 diapers left which he is currently bursting out of. Mommy has been peed on several times this week by leaky, too-small Huggies.

Henry has also taken to exploring Mommy and Daddy’s faces with his little paws. He’ll feel our faces and then, sometimes, touch the corresponding parts on his own face. He’s such a smart little monkey!
